彩虹是一种光学现象，当阳光照射到半空中的雨点， 光线被折射及反射，在天空上形成拱形的七彩的光谱。 在中国神话中，女娲炼五色石补天，彩虹即五色石发 出的彩光。彩虹一般有七种颜色，通常是“红、橙、 黄、绿、青(cyan，由绿色和蓝色混合而成)、蓝、 紫”。
奥林匹克五环标志由5个奥林匹克环套接组成，由蓝、 黑、红、黄、绿5种颜色。环从左到右互相套接，上 面是蓝、黑、红环，下面是是黄、绿环。整个造形为一 个底部小的规则梯形。五个不同颜色的圆环代表了参加现 代奥林匹克运动会的五大洲——欧洲、亚洲、非洲、大洋 洲和美洲。
关于各种颜色的翻译方法：
1.直译
对于英汉两种语言中都使用的实物颜色词，可以采取对等直译的方式。例如： But one afternoon I was walking across the yard and stopped to pick up an acorn---one acorn, nut brown, glossy, cool to touch; „ 一天下午，我在院里散步，无意中停下来，拾起一颗橡子——那是一颗栗色的、光滑的，摸起来感觉很凉的橡子。
2. 借译
当一种语言中某种实物代表某种颜色，而另一种语言则没有用这种实物代表这种颜色的习惯，可以从译语中找出与原实物颜色相对应或相近的另一种实物来表达这种颜色。如：raven hair 乌黑的头发/漆黑的头发 ;pitch black/jet-black 漆黑; ivory-colored / cream-colored 米色; opal-colored 乳白色
3. 意译
对于那些在一种语言中常用，而在另一种语言中不常用或不使用的实物颜色词在译语里面又找不到可以借用表达这种颜色的实物颜色词，比较好采取意译即使用基本颜色词的方法。
