托福必背作文一:

私家车普及的利与弊

Advantages and disadvantages of private cars.

With the fantastic spur both in industry and in economy in China, the number of people who own private cars is on the rise. Some people have bought cars of their own, and others are planning to buy cars. But there have been two quite different views on this phenomenon.

Some claim that there are many advantages brought about by cars. First, the automobile industry provides jobs for countless workers and strong support for other industries. Second, if conditions permit, owning a car can make us work more efficiently. Finally, life will become more convenient. A car allows one to move freely and with a car there is no need to wait for the bus in the cold or under the burning sun.

However, others strongly object to the increase in developing private cars. They hold that automobiles will give rise to a series of problems. In the first place, as more and more cars are produced and run in the street, a large volume of poisonous gas will be given off, polluting the atmosphere and causing actual harm to the health of people. Next, private cars contribute to traffic congestion so greatly that the advantages gained in comfort and freedom are often cancelled out by the frustration caused by traffic jams. The last problem is the increasing number of car accidents that have killed and will kill a lot of people in a friction of a second.

In my opinion, although automobiles have been playing a vital part in the daily activities of our society, they also bring us numerous troubles such as more serious environmental pollution, more traffic accidents and more energy consumption. They drink up huge amounts of fuel and throw out huge amounts of pollutants. Traffic accidents kill thousands and thousands of people each year and cripple more. Jams waste our precious time. Therefore I am against developing private cars.

Globally, we have moved from a culture centered on network television, cable, AM and FM radio and telephone into a digital society with mass media, streaming information, intelligent computer. To shift to a digital economy, best demonstrated by the explosive growth of the Internet, is transforming everyday products and practices. Ideas expressed in soft wares, chips, communication systems, financial institutions and mass media have enormous leverage worldwide. Beyond emails and online shopping, the Internet promises to change dramatically huge spectrum activities. Its benefits can be well illustrated in the following aspects.

In the first place, it contributes to escape us from laborious work, save our time, facilitate our lives. Secondly, with computer’s extensive reach into every corner of the world, a perspective of human life can be shown only with a single keystroke. No matter where we are, in school, business workshops, operating rooms, labs, banks of halls of government, the Internet appears to reflect a perspective of human life. Furthermore, computer profits us by relaxation and entertainment it provides.

But on the other hand, some people debate that it is also inconvenient, waste the time, isolated us from people only with the company of computers, and make our lives more complicated. Some people repair the most sophisticated computer but can’t mend a pair of socks. Yet in fact, computer collapse the distances and demolishes all boundaries. Whether computer is a blessing or a curse, depends on different circumstance and the way you use it.

As a new millennium approach, we look forward to constructing a new fantasyland by combination with the wealth this new age will bring and the high technology it will provide.

综合教育与专业研究

In some countries ,schools aim to provide a general education across a range of subjects ,in others ,children focus on a narrow range of subjects related to a particular career. For today's world, which system is appropriate?

Historically speaking, schools arose from the “ academia” of Plato ,who primarily instituted this society as a place for both reflection and meditation for the true meaning of life ,universe and our final aim as human beings. But this trend has incurred some tough tests recently for a totally different reason that Plato could not even dream of. As my own evaluation, the range of education cannot be just narrowed within those related to their future careers.

What comes into my mind is that these children are not born for a sole purpose of being a worker or something. Predetermining their future career is just as a moon in the water and will also subject to great varieties of unknown possibilities coming directly in their future life. They are ,however, and firstly , a son or daughter and then a citizen ,then a holder to certain careers. Therefore ,we can figure out a truth that cannot be truer: those intellectual equipments that can better them as a good child and citizen alike should also be included in their both primary ,secondary and even tertiary education.

Closely next to my previous thought was that a solely-career-related education may mislead their own purpose of life. Surely a decent income is of great significance ,but it is far from the sole importance of life. If those youngsters are educated entirely for earning and enjoying their material life ,our society may gradually turn to one that overwhelmed with nothing but the torrent of materialism and thus a world with nothing but just trading of Mammon and his wealth. This impact is even worse than just narrowing one’s education scope.

Therefore ,I hereby object to limiting the sphere of education only to the children’s future careers but they should first of all become a complete human before making a prospective wealth with full range of knowledge.

自私的现代人

Some people believe that greed and selfishness has become the basis of modern society, and we should return to the old traditions of family and community then we will have a better life. To what extent do you agree or disagree with the above opinion?

In this fast-paced world, many values are undergoing major changes. While people traditionally prioritize caring, sharing and generosity in life and work, modern people seem to be more self-absorbing and self-concerned.

Modern people act selfishly to survive the harsh competition of life. We say that it is a jungle out there. To survive, you have to fight with whatever means that come handy. Obviously greedy and selfishness go perfectly well with such ideas. In a company, employees do everything they can to get better pay and higher position, even at the cost of colleagues. We are in any way advocating any selfish conduct. It is just that people are pressured to act in a certain way due to outside influences.

In spite of common practice, it is hard to conclude that modern society is built on greed and selfishness, both of which are not newly invented vocabulary. In ancient times people also did greedy and selfish things though such behaviors were more condemned then. But we can not ignore the fact that people in the past lived a relatively more isolated life and faced less pressure compared with their modern counterparts.

Are we happier to share with others and be generous to them? There is no fixed answer either. Some people take great pleasure helping and giving to others while others feel happy doing the opposite. But I personally think that people should not be too selfish. Caring for others can actually encourage the development of a mutually beneficial relationship.

In conclusion, modern people appear to be more self-centered than those in the past due to strong outside pressure. However, we should encourage people to know the importance of being caring and generous and build a mutually beneficial relationship with others.

托福必背作文五:

现代社会的唯物主义

Materialism means placing great importance on material things such as clothes, property, and furniture. Many people complain that modern society is too materialistic. Are people in these times “what they own “or “what they are “? Explain your thoughts on the matter in an essay of about 250 words.

Many people complain that modern society is too materialistic. Other people, they say, place too great an importance on material property. Rather than value values, these critics insist, people today value things.

There is no doubt that we live in a material, consumer-oriented society. In economic terms, consumers use products; in everyday language, they acquire things: TVs, cars, clothes, furniture. This kind of materialism can actually be good for a society since it helps create jobs. When people have jobs, they acquire self-respect along with the money they need to provide the material things they and their families require.

It is true, on the other hand, that many people have taken healthy consumerism too far. Materialism is evident when an otherwise intelligent person goes into debt charging things that he or she cannot pay for. Materialism is evident when people insist on buying a particular designer label even though the same quality can be found in a cheaper product. Materialism is evident when people are judged and admired for what they own rather than what they are or can do.

Even if society has gone too far in the direction of materialism, as some say, the individual person doesn't need to surrender. He or she can still value honesty, integrity, freedom, talent, quality, and all the other values there are to value and leave the materialism to others.
