Raising Children

The job of raising children is a tough one. Children don't come with an instructionmanual. And each child is different. So parents sometimes pull their hair out in frustration, notknowing what to do. But in raising children-as in all of life-what we do is influenced by ourculture. Naturally then, American parents teach their children basic American values.

To Americans, the goal of parents is to help children stand on their own two feet. Frominfancy, each child may get his or her own room. As children grow, they gain more freedom tomake their own choices. Teenagers choose their own forms of entertainment, as well as thefriends to share them with. When they reach young adulthood, they choose their own careersand marriage partners. Of course, many young adults still seek their parents' advice andapproval for the choices they make. But once they "leave the nest" at around 18 to 21 yearsold, they want to be on their own, not "tied to their mother's apron strings."

The relationship between parents and children in America is very informal. Americanparents try to treat their children as individuals-not as extensions of themselves. They allowthem to fulfill their own dreams. Americans praise and encourage their children to give themthe confidence to succeed. When children become adults, their relationship with their parentsbecomes more like a friendship among equals. But contrary to popular belief, most adultAmericans don't make their parents pay for room and board when they come to visit. Even asadults, they respect and honor their parents.

Most young couples with children struggle with the issue of childcare. Mothers havetraditionally stayed home with their children. In recent years, though, a growing trend is to putpreschoolers in a day care center so Mom can work. Many Americans have strong feelings aboutwhich type of arrangement is best. Some argue that attending a day care center can be apositive experience for children. Others insist that mothers are the best caregivers for children.A number of women are now leaving the work force to become full-time homemakers.

Disciplining children is another area that American parents have differing opinions about. Many parents feel that an old-fashioned spanking helps youngsters learn what "No!" means.Others prefer alternate forms of discipline. For example, "time outs" have become popular inrecent years. Children in "time out" have to sit in a corner or by a wall. They can get up onlywhen they are ready to act nicely. Older children and teenagers who break the rules may begrounded, or not allowed to go out with friends. Some of their privileges at home-like TV ortelephone use-may also be taken away for a while. Although discipline isn't fun for parents orchildren, it's a necessary part of training.

Being a parent is a tall order. It takes patience, love, wisdom, courage and a good sense ofhumor to raise children (and not lose your sanity). Some people are just deciding not to havechildren at all, since they're not sure it's worth it. But raising children means training the nextgeneration and preserving our culture. What could be worth more than that?

The United States is the only superpower in the world, and it is far more advanced than anyother country.

However, we can't simply attribute its powerfulness and prosperity to its lucky escape fromthe destruction of the two world wars.

What other nations should reflect on is the American spirit and its social system.

The most obvious features of the American Spirit are creativity and pragmatism.

Nearly 70% of the important inventions have been made in the U.S. since the first industrialrevolution.

Since the U.S. occupies such an important position in science and technology, naturally it hasbecome the first superpower in the world.

Americans are always discontent with what they have achieved, and they have an appetite foradventure over the love of ease.

European countries have been pursuing a reformist policy of "high tax and high welfare" sincethe 1960s, while only the U.S. sticks to the policy of "high risk and high return".

As a result, the U.S. has become the bellwether of the third industrial revolution (in technologyof information, materials and biology).

High salary is not the only attraction that the talents from other countries find in the UnitedStates.

Some characteristics of American society should not be ignored.

Family backgrounds and great wisdom in building connections and playing up the boss, to whichgreat importance is attached in other countries, are not so important to individual developmentin the U.S.

Most people are on the same starting line, and whether one can succeed or not depends on hisown ability and hard work.

However, the American character is full of paradoxes.

The American people are both extremely romantic and pragmatic.

The American is a pleasure-seeking people, but in every field there are workaholics.

The Americans are open-minded but they are very conservative on certain matters.

Since China's reform and opening-up to the outside world, many media in Western countrieshave greatly changed their attitudes towards China.

However, the American media are singing the same old tune against China as they were in theCold War period.

The Americans value freedom, but their government is very fond of interfering in othercountries' internal affairs.

What's most puzzling is that the Americans defy authority, but they highly respect the lawsand regulations of the society.

Therefore, in such a nation that values personal liberty, the society can still be kept in goodorder and operate with high efficiency.

Is it odd? No one can provide a satisfactory answer.

Here are many differences between China and the USA in the way of life. These differences performance in all aspects.Breakfast, For example, breakfast, the Chinese and Americans have many differences.

Chinese breakfast often consists of rice and small amounts of vegetables, meat or fish. But in the USA people like to eat some eggs and toast. In China we like eat rice porridge or soybean milk in the breakfast. However, as far as I know, the Americans like drink coffee, milk or some fruit juice in the breakfast. In China, people like deep fried food much, like Oil Strips("you tiao", in China), what is long, deep fried strips of dough is similar to a doughnut. They can be sweet or salty, but in my opinion, Americans seems not like them.Americans prefer to eat some simple food, like bread, eggs, ham or to buy McDonald's hamburgers,in the morning.

Traditionally, Chinese people like to eat their own breakfast at home. However, in many large cities, with the accelerating pace of life, more and more people are prefer to eat breakfast outside. The Chinese people buy "bao zi" and soybean milk to eat in the morning is just like the American people buy coffee in Starbucks and buy hamburgs in McDonald's. In China, people do not read the newspapers during the breakfast, but in American, people always read the newspapers when they eat the breakfast.

American Vacations

It's summertime, and the life is easy. For many Americans, this is the season to travel. Why? Because school is out. Because the weather is great. And most of all, because we all deserve a break. When Americans take a break, they often head for their favorite vacation spot.

Many American vacations are as unique as the people who take them. Families often plan their trips with the kids in mind. More and more "family friendly" vacation resorts offer special programs for children.

History buffs seek out famous historical sites and museums. Environmentalists prefer "green vacations." These trips allow them to observe flora and fauna up-close without disturbing the sensitive balance of nature.

Some people find sea cruises relaxing and refreshing. Others hit the water to go fishing, skiing or white-water rafting. Daring souls get the thrill of a lifetime on trekking expeditions and safaris in remote places from Afica to Asia.

Americans aren't the only people in the world who travel. International business, mass communication and jet airplanes have created a world of globetrotters.

People all over the world enjoy going abroad to travel. And no matter where they live, people enjoy visiting scenic spots in their own country. But being on the go makes Americans what they are: people on the move. In America, almost everybody is a tourist sometime.

Customer Service

Would you like to be a king or queen? To have people waiting on you hand and foot? ManyAmericans experience this royal treatment every day. How? By being customers. The Americanidea of customer service is to make each customer the center of attention. Need proof? Justlisten to the commercials. Most of them sound like the McDonald's ad: "We do it all for you."Actually, not all stores in America roll out the red carpet for their customers. But wherever yougo, good customer service means making customers feel special.

People going shopping in America can expect to be treated with respect from the verybeginning. Most places don't have a "furniture street" or a "computer road" which allow you tocompare prices easily. Instead, people often use the telephone and "let their fingers do thewalking" through the Yellow Pages. From the first "hello," customers receive a courteousresponse to their questions. This initial contact can help them decide where to shop.

When customers get to the store, they are treated as honored guests. Customers don'tusually find store clerks sitting around watching TV or playing cards. Instead, the clerks greetthem warmly and offer to help them find what they want. In most stores, the signs that labeleach department make shopping a breeze. Customers usually don't have to ask how muchitems cost, since prices are clearly marked. And unless they're at a flea market or a yard sale, they don't bother trying to bargain.

When customers are ready to check out, they find the nearest and shortest checkout lane. But as Murphy's Law would have it, whichever lane they get in, all the other lanes will movefaster. Good stores open new checkout lanes when the lanes get too long. Some even offerexpress lanes for customers with 10 items or less. After they pay for their purchases, customers receive a smile and a warm "thank you" from the clerk. Many stores even allowcustomers to take their shopping carts out to the parking lot. That way, they don't have tocarry heavy bags out to the car.

In America, customer service continues long after the sale. Many products come with amoney-back guarantee. Expensive items-like cars, computers or stereos-often have awarranty that ensures trouble-free use for a period of a year or more. Advertisements regularlyinclude the motto "Your satisfaction is guaranteed." So if there is a problem with the product, customers can take it back. The customer service representative will often allow them toexchange the item or return it for a full refund. Here's a trivia question: Do you know what'sthe busiest time for most customer service representatives? The week after Christmas.

For many American customers, service is everything. If a person receives poor service froma store, he probably will avoid shopping there in the future. On the other hand, customersoften remain loyal to a business that has excellent service even if their prices are high.Customer service in America grows out of the belief that "the customer is always right." Thatmay not always be true. But, as someone has said, the customer is always the customer.
