One day, an owl1 flew persistently2 towards the east till it was completely exhausted3, so it stopped in a forest to take a rest. It happened that a turtledove was also resting there. Hearing the panting of the owl, it asked: "Where are you going in such a hurry?"

The owl said: "I am moving to the east."

The turtledove asked closely: "Why?"

The owl said: "The people in the west all say my cry is unpleasant and dislike me I cannot stay there any longer. I must move to a new place."

The turtledove said: "Can you solve your problem by changing a place? In my opinion, no matter where you move to, it won't help."

The owl felt rather angry at the words of the turtledove, but it still asked in surprise: "Can you forecast the future?"

The turtledove said: "This is very simple. If you don't change your cry, the people in the east will dislike you all the same."

The Fisherman and the little fish

There once was a fisherman who lived in a little house by the ocean. He fished every day to feed his family. One day, he caught nothing except one small fish. "This isn't much," thought the fisherman, "but it's better than nothing."

The little fish hopped around in the net and cried out to the fisherman. "Please return me to the water!" he said. "I'm too small to be a good dinner. Someday, I'll be big and fat. You could catch me then and feed your family for a week!"

The fisherman listened as the fish spoke. He knew his family would love a big, fat fish.

But he also knew that the ocean was very big. If he threw the fish back, he would never find it again.

"Little fish," he said, "I would be a fool to put you back. You'll only be a small meal for my family, but at least they will have food. I cannot feed them with silly dreams!"

Appreciate the small things that you have. Don't give them up to chase impossible things.

The wind and the sun

One day, the wind and the sun were arguing about who was the strongest. "It is clear that I am the strongest," said the wind. "When I blow, branches break off the trees, and the waves beat on the shore."

"That's nothing," said the sun. "I am much stronger than that." Just then, they saw a man wearing a heavy coat. "We will both try to make this man take off his coat," said the sun. "Whoever succeeds will be the strongest."

The wind agreed to go first. He blew hard at the man, but it was no use. The man became cold and held onto his coat with both hands.

Then it was the sun's turn. He came out from behind a cloud and shone gently down on the man. The man smiled and took off his coat to enjoy the warm sunshine.

"You see?" asked the sun. "Kindness and gentleness are stronger than anything in the world."

One day, a colt(小马,生手) carried a bag of wheat to the mill.

As he was running with the bag on his back, he came to a small river. Water went gurgling(作汩汩声) on. The colt could not decide whether he could cross it. Looking around, he saw a cow grazing nearby. He asked, "Uncle Cow, could you tell me if I can cross the river?" The cow told him that he could and that the river was not very deep, just to his knees.

The colt was crossing the river when a squirrel jumped down a tree and stopped him. The squirrel shouted, "Colt, stop! You'll be drowned! One of my friends was drowned yesterday just in the river." Not knowing what to do, the colt went home to consult his mom.

He told his mom his experience on the way. His mother said, "My child, don't always listen to others. You'd better go and try yourself. Then you'll know what to do."

Just at the river, the squirrel stopped the colt again. "Little horse, it's too dangerous!" "No, I want to have a try by myself", answered the colt. Then he crossed the river carefully. On the other side of the river, the colt realized that the river was neither as shallow as the cow said nor as as deep as the squirrel told him.

Apollo was the god of music and poetry. He could stir up all feelings. These feelings are expressed in lofty songs. With his lyre of gold and the sweet accents of his godlike voice heled the choir of the Muses at Olympus. The pleasant music from his lyre was so exciting that stones marched into their places in rhythmic time and of their own will when he helped Poseidonbuild up the walls of Troy.On one occasion, invited to a contest by the human musician Marsyas,he won and then flayed him to death for his pride. On another occasion,he lost out toPan at a musical contest and turned the ears of the judge,King Midas, into those of an ass.

His son,Orpheus, took over such skill from the father that his lyre moved man and animals alike.

Apollo stood for youthful and manly beauty. His goldenhair, stately manner and air all combined to make him the admiration of the world.A beautiful girl,by the name of Clytle, was so fond of his beauty and glory that from dawn to dusk she knelt on the ground, her hands outstretched towards the sungod, and her eyes looked at his golden wheeled carriage racing across the blue sky.Though her love was not returned, she had never changed her mind about Apollo. The gods were moved at the sad sight, and changed her into a sunflower.
