Empty Your Cup

A university professor went to visit a famous Zen master. While the master quietly served tea, the professor talked about Zen. The master poured the visitor's cup to the brim, and then kept pouring.

The professor watched the overflowing cup until he could no longer restrain himself. "It's overfull! No more will go in!" the professor blurted. "You are like this cup," the master replied, "How can I show you Zen unless you first empty your cup."

A group of graduates got together to visit their old university professor.

The conversation soon turned into complaints about stress in work and life. Offering his guests coffee, the professor went to the kitchen and returned with a large pot of coffee and a variety of cups—porcelain, plastic, glass, crystal, some plain-looking, some expensive, some exquisite—telling them to help themselves to the coffee.

When all the students had a cup of coffee in hand, the professor said,

"If you have noticed, all the nice-looking expensive cups have been taken up, leaving behind the plain and cheap ones. While it is normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the source of your problems and stress. "

"Be assured that the cup itself adds no quality to the coffee. In most cases it is just more expensive and in some cases even hides what we drink. "

"What all of you really want is coffee, not the cup, but you consciously went for the best cups... And then you began eyeing each other's cups.

"Now consider this: Life is the coffee; the jobs, money and position in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold and contain life, and the type of cup we have does not define, nor change the quality of life we live. Sometimes, by concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the coffee. Savor the coffee, not the cups! Don't let the cups drive you ... enjoy the coffee instead."

You nested two glasses when you put them away – and now they’re stuck! Gently pry them apart with this system.

STEP 1 Turn on the tap

Fill the top glass with ice water; the cold will make the glass molecules contract.

Add salt to the ice water to chill it faster.

STEP 2 Switch to hot water

With the top glass still full of ice water, run hot water over the bottom glass, or place it in a few inches of hot water. The heat makes the bottom glass expand.

STEP 3 Do the twist

3.扭动

Gently twist the two glasses; they should come apart easily.

STEP 4 Adjust temperatures

Still stuck? Try colder water, or keep the bottom glass submerged in the hot water a little longer. Unsticking them can take anywhere from one to 10 minutes, depending on the glasses.

One ton of glass consists of 1,300 pounds of sand and 380 pounds of limestone.

I Am a Glass of Unlimited Volume

Zhang Mo

Standing on the face of time

A layer of cold light faintly floats

Sinking as you draw near

Rising as you move away

I am a glass of unlimited volume

Piercing its clear pupils

To grasp the moving fluid

As if to glimpse everything

Exposed under the sun’s rays

There is nothing after all

Other than a huge stemless glass

I am delighted that the world surges like waves

Fortunately, I am a glass of unlimited volume
