1. Startle sb out of sth
这个短语意指把人吓得魂飞魄散， sth可以是one's wits，senses，或者mind，表示被吓得没了知觉……
例：The explosion startled Polly out of her senses.
波莉被爆炸声吓傻了。
2. Scare sb to death
被别人吓到了，你可以说：You scared me. (你吓着了我。) 如果别人把你吓得不轻，则可以用上面这个短语，表示“吓死了”。
例：You nearly scared me to death.

3. Frighten the pants off
吓到裤子都掉了，很形象地形容出人惊恐万分，被吓得屁滚尿流。

be afraid 表示害怕，这个短语的用法有三种：
1. be afraid of sth; be afraid of (doing); 这种用法后面跟名词，当然也可以跟动名词 - ing，很好记住，因为 of 是个介词，介词后面自然跟名词、动名词或者代词 ( 代词是代替名词的 )。例如：
She is afraid of darkness. 她害怕黑暗。(跟名词)
Everyone is afraid of death. 每个人都害怕死亡。(跟名词)
She is a little afraid of snakes. 她有点怕蛇。
Ann is afraid of going ou at night. 安害怕晚上出门。(跟动名词)
Our teacher is kind. No one is afraid of him. 我们的老师很和善，没人害怕他。(跟代词)
2. be afraid to (do); 这个时候后跟不定式，我们知道，不定式具有对未来的“暗示”，所以 be afraid to do 的意思是“害怕不做......”，即对要做的事情感到害怕。
Monkey King is afraid of to see Master again. 美猴王害怕再见到师傅。
She was afraid of to be late. 她害怕迟到。
Don’t be so afraid to stay at home alone at night. 别害怕晚上一个人在家里。
3. be afraid that+从句。这个结构中，that 引导的是个从句，虽然afraid是个形容词，但在中学英语中，我们依然把这个从句处理成宾语从句，这个从句用于引出害怕出现的情况。如：
I’m afraid that somebody will take his place because he has made serious mistakes. 恐怕 有人要取代他了因，为他犯了巨大的错误。
