I made a simple kite for my son during the last National Day. Since I’d never made a kite before, I’d thought it would be a tough task. But it turned out that making a kite was actually just a piece of cake.

I decided on its shape first. I just chose a flat one because it was virtually the most basic structure and could be easily carried around. Then I got a sheet of coloured paper and cut out the shape.

My son got thin plastic strips for me. I tied them together with a string, which apparently would be the frame of the kite. After that, we made the bridle which connected the frame to the control line. Finally I glued the paper to the frame.

It seemed to be an arduous work as it took me a whole afternoon to finish it but finally it turned out to be quite rewardful. The kite flew pretty well in the garden the next day. Our hard work paid off. I chose a hand work as a gift because I reckoned it more precious for my son than the toys bought in the shops. Besides, doing a hand work offered me and my son an opportunity to experience the simple pleasures of life.

Describe an occasion that you borrowed something from friends or family members

You should say:

What the thing was

When you borrowed it

Whom you borrowed it from

And explain why you borrowed the thing

Last year, like in December, I went to Beijing for a training and all the trainees were told to bring laptops since after the training everyone had to go through an assessment. It was only a 2-day training so I was wondering maybe I shouldn’t bring too many things with me, so I borrowed a really big backpack from my mom, as i need to bring a laptop with me. I do have a school bag but it is quite small, so the laptop couldn’t fit in. So I needed a larger one to carry heavy loads.

It is a black backpack fitted with one large pocket for the laptop and several pockets for small-sized items, it has big capacity for all the items that i need for the trip. My mom did commercial air travel a lot, so she has not only lent me the bag, but also a down jacket, since the winter in my hometown is quite warm, i haven’t worn a down jacket for years. But the winter in Beijing, it is cold and feature strong winds. So i also have borrowed a down jacket to keep me warm.

I thought I had made a good decision to have the backpack as carry-on bag for airplane travel. Because on one hand, i had more of my possessions at hand during the flight, and i have skipped the very time-consuming baggage claim process, and have avoided the risk of having the checked baggage lost or damaged. So i have spent less time on checking in the luggage and waiting in the line.

After the 2-day training, we flew back home, we arrived at Kunming international airport at 1 am, some of my friends had to wait for the luggage claim for another 30 mins, however i had already hopped on a taxi and left. So i thought a backpack, or any form of hand luggage really saved people time and energy for air travel. So it was a time I have borrowed a bag from my mom and it was really useful.

1. What skills are necessary when making decisions?

Making decisions is a complex process, which might involve a great many skills. For starters, the ability of collecting facts and figures is essential, because the first step of making a decision is to get a whole understanding of the relevant information. Sometimes, we need to be computer-literate to look up information on the Internet. Secondly, we shall be able to do some data analysis so that we can make a wise decision. In addition, we need to keep calm inside, even when it is an urgent situation and we are asked to make prompt decisions, otherwise we might decide on something and regret it quite soon. Finally, a good decision-maker should be able to control his own mood and never get emotional, since we are not likely to make a good decision when we are thrilled, furious or anxious. So to sum up, there are plenty of necessary skills when making a decision. Sometimes we are not even aware of them.

2. How can people improve their decision-making skills?

这个题目的回答思路其实还是比较广的,我们可以将此题和上一题联系起来(很多时候考官确实会把这样的两道题目连着问),那么此时我们就应该从上一题的答案出发,具体讲解如何提高搜集信息的能力,如何提高分析数据的能力等等,这是一个思路;

I think people can improve their decision-making skills the way they do to improve all other skills – by learning and practising. If someone feels that he is not good at making decisions, the first thing he might have to do is to observe – to find out how others will react when it comes to a similar circumstance. The second step is to compare and contrast. By doing this, people can have a clear understanding of the strong points and the weakness in their decision-making process, so that they could make a progress. The key point of improving the decision-making skills lies in practice. Just like everything, decision-making skills could get strengthened only when we put them into reality. Provided we keep training ourselves in this way, we can all become wise and responsible decision-makers.

3. Do parents in China allow their children to make important decisions about the future?

Well, it’s unlikely to simply say yes or no to this question, since things differ enormously in different families. Some parents allow their children to make almost every decision about the future, from what major to choose, to what kind of person to marry. These are so-called “open-minded” or “enlightened” parents. They are also the popular ones. Children all dream of having this kind of parents and those who do have, are often very proud, confident and independent. However, there are some other parents, who act in a totally opposite way. They feel that they could not trust their children to make any decision, let alone important ones. They are overprotective parents, and without knowing it, they might even ruin their children’s life in the name of “love”. It’s actually very terrible. To me, one of the greatest jobs of a parent is to teach the children how to make decisions on their own, so that children can grow up as mature, responsible adults.
