Companion planting is the idea that some kinds of plants can help each other grow. Plants thatare compatible together generally have similar needs in terms of nutrients, soil and moisturelevels.

Advice about which plants are compatible is sometimes based more on tradition than proof. But experts say there is evidence to support certain combinations. These can improveharvests, reduce disease and help with pest control by attracting helpful insects.

For example, some kinds of soil bacteria take nitrogen from the air and make it into a form thatplants can use. The plants hold the nitrogen in their roots. Legumes are especially good at thisnitrogen-fixing. Then any crops that share the same space as the legumes can get the nitrogenas the roots decompose.

Beans and potatoes can also share territory well because their roots reach different levels inthe soil. Deep-rooted vegetables get nutrients and moisture from lower down in the soil, sothey do not compete with plants with shallower roots.

But some plants placed together may harm each other's development. For example, tomatoesdo not like wet soil but watercress does, so you would probably want to keep them separated.

Some kinds of produce should be kept apart even after being harvested. This is because ofethylene gas. Ethylene is a plant hormone that can cause some foods to ripen too quickly.Apples release ethylene gas. Apricots, melons and tomatoes also release a lot of ethylene. Some vegetable are easily affected by ethylene, including asparagus, broccoli, cabbage andcucumbers.

This risk of ripening too soon is why markets often separate high ethylene-producing foodsfrom those that are sensitive to the gas.

But if you put an apple in a bag with a green banana, the ethylene from the apple will make thebanana ready to eat sooner.

What about peaches, plums and nectarines that are too firm to eat? These kinds of fruit do notneed any help from an apple — they release enough ethylene to ripen themselves. But thatdoes not mean there is no way to get the job done faster.

Growers suggest placing the fruit in a fruit bowl or in a paper bag with the top folded over.Keep the fruit at room temperature, out of direct sunlight. Once the fruit is soft enough toyour liking, either use it or put it in the refrigerator to keep it from getting too ripe. Yuck.

Planting Trees 植树

Yesterday was Tree Planting Day. The teachers asked us to plant trees at the corner of our playground. At 3:00 in the afternoon, we got there. When we finished our work, it was nearly dark.

It was fine on March 12 , 2001 . I got up early that day . All the students in our school went to the hill to plant trees .

We arrived at the hill at eight o'clock . The teacher asked each of us to plant at least six trees . Then we started digging , planting and watering . When he finished his task , he went on to help others without even a little rest . He was wet all over after work .“ I must learn from him ,” I said to myself . Looking at the lines of the young trees , we smiled happily , forgetting our tiredness .

Plants seem to know which way is up and which way is down; besides, they seem to know right from left. If a cutting from a tree is kept alive, new shoots will grow from the end that grew in the highest part of the tree.

There is no noticeable difference between the top and the bottom of the living stick, even under a microscope. Even so, the stick will not send out shoots from the end it regards as bottom even if this end happens to be on top!

Scientists studying this subject further split their cuttings in the direction of length.

To their surprise, they made another new discovery. A good many more buds grew on the righthand side of the split surface than on the left. They split the sticks again and found that the buds again grew on the right side.

The results of the entire study showed a 60% choice for the right side, proving that growing plants are mostly “righthanded.”

It‘s been a long time since I‘ve done something positive to the environment. Feeling guilty-ridden and determined to do something that I know would definitely please my parents and teachers,I decided to plant several trees on the hill in the rural area of the city on tree planting day with a few friends.

Feeling breezy and light-hearted, we came to the foot of the hill and selected a place that looked suitable and settled down. We spent a few hours digging holes and placing the young seedlings. We took numerous pictures of the beautiful place. We also wrote our wishes and buried it deep down the roots of the trees. I felt tired quickly and though I didn‘t realise it, it was time to go. I gazed up at the sky and took in all the wonderful features of Mother Nature. I felt really glad that we made it for this trip and sweared that I would do my part on protecting the environment.
