Once upon a time the Frogs decided to ask Jupiter, the king of the gods, for a King of their own. Jupiter was amused.

"Here you are," he said, throwing a log of wood with a splash into the lake where they lived. " Here is a king for you."

The Frogs dived under the water in fright, burrowing as deep into the mud as they could. After a time one of the braver ones swam cautiously to the surface to take a look at the new King.

"He looks very quite,: said the Frog. :Perhaps he is asleep."

The log stayed quite still on the smooth lake and one by one more Frogs came up to take a look.

They swam closer and closer until at last they leaped right on top of it, quite forgetting that they had been frightened.

Young Frogs began to use it as a diving board; old Frogs sat sunning themselves on it; mother Frogs taught their tadpoles their first, wobbly jumps on its bark.

One day an old Frog said: "This is a dull king of a King, you know. I thought we wanted someone to keep us in order. This one just lies around and lets us do what we please."

So the Frogs went once more to Jupiter.

"Can't you give us a better King?" they asked. "Someone who will be a bit more active than the one you sent before?"

Jupiter was not in a good mood.

"Silly little animals, "he thought . "I shall give them just what they deserve this time."

He sent a long-legged stork to the lake.

The Frogs were very impressed and crowded admiringly round.

But before they could even begin the speeches of welcome they had prepared, the stork stuck his long beak into the water and began to gobble up as many Frogs as he could see.

"That's not what we meant at all," gasped the Frogs as they dived once more into the mud. But this time Jupiter would not listen.

"I only gave you what you asked for," he said, "Perhaps it will teach you not to complain about things so much."

Magnifying glass, calipers, teeny tiny tape measure. These are the weapons with which researchers are fighting it out to find the world’s smallest frog.

One team just announced the discovery of the on-average 7.7 millimeter Paedophryne amanuensis, which can sit comfortably on a dime. It was discovered in the moist under-layer of New Guinea’s tropical rainforest. The research was published in the journal Public Library of Science One.

The little guy thus ousts another New Guinea frog, which had only claimed the title in December. The newest frog species is also being cited as the world’s smallest vertebrate, although it’s more correctly the smallest free-living vertebrate. A 6.2 millimeter male anglerfish spends its life buried in the body of its mate.

Finding the little frog was no small achievement. Besides being tiny, the high-pitched mating calls researchers followed sound more insect than amphibian. [Frog calls.]

Tiny vertebrates reveal changes that make miniaturization possible. For instance, some of the digits on the frogs’ feet have disappeared. And their skulls develop differently than those of larger critters.

So we celebrate the world’s smallest frog and free-living vertebrate. Until the next one is discovered.

Scientists discover new species all the time—on the order of 15,000 a year. One of the latest additions to the tree of life is a new type of leopard frog. Which might sound unremarkable, except for where it was found: New York City.

But how does a frog go unnoticed in the Big Apple? Well even experts have a hard time telling this new species from its northern and southern cousins on looks alone. But the new guy has a different croak, which raised ecologists' suspicions. So they tracked down four leopard frog populations with the unique call—including one within view of the Statue of Liberty—and took DNA samples.

As they suspected, the odd croakers weren't southern or northern leopard frogs, or even a mix. They had a genetic ancestry of their own—earning them new species status. Those results appear in the journal Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution.

The frogs are tough New Yorkers—the center of their range appears to be Yankee Stadium. But the researchers say that the urban amphibians face threats like pesticides and infectious diseases. Not to mention real-life games of Frogger.

Last Saturday Wang Ping went to the fields to catch frogs.Soon he caught a full bag of them. He felt very pleased because he thought he would make a lot of money after he sold them.

A few days later, he went to the fields again. But he was surprised this time. When he went up, a crowd of insects attacked him. While crying, he threw his net and bag away, and ran away as fast as possible.
