英语时态过去进行时：
有些词只要出现句子中，就表示这个句子是过去时，常见的标志性词语有：yesterday , last , ago , before , in+年或月 , on+日 , just now(或者a moment ago) ;再加上was+v-ing，就可以判断这个句子是过去进行时了。例如：
1.I called you yesterday afternoon but there was no answer.
昨天下午我打电话给你，但是没有人接电话。
2.I was visiting a friend of mine most of the afternoon.
我昨天下午大部分时间，都在一个朋友家里。
3.It was raining hard when I left my office.
当我离开办公室时，雨下得正大。
4. When you called，I was eating.
你打电话时，我正在吃饭。
5. When I was cleaning the windows， my brother was sweeping the floor.
我在擦窗户的时候，我弟弟在拖地。
6. Some students were playing football，while others were running round the track.
一些学生在踢足球，同时别的学生正在跑道上跑步。
7. We were walking along the river when(suddenly) It rained.
我们沿着河边散步，突然下起雨来。
8. They were watching TV when the lights went out.

While在过去进行时中的用法：
一、while在句子中的用法很多，在过去进行时的表达中也经常遇到，它表示“当……时候”的意思。
二、while在过去进行时句子中，只能表示某一段时间，不能表示某一点时间。在while引导的时间状语从句中，其谓语动词只能是延续性的，而且也只能与主句中的谓语动词同时发生或存在。例如：
1. While Jim was mending his bike, Lin Tao came to see him.
正当吉姆修自行车时，林涛来看他。
2. You can’t do your homework while you’re watching TV.
你不能一边看电视一边做家庭作业。
三、While we were talking，the teacher came in. 我们正谈话的时候，老师进来了。这个句子是个复合句。其中while we were talking 是由while引导的时间状语从句。这里while表示主句的动作是发生在从句所表示的时间之中。显然，while 所表示的是一段时间，不是表示一点时间。试比较：
They were sweeping the floor when the teacher came in.
老师进来时(这一时刻)，他们在擦地板。
While they were sweeping the floor，the teacher came in.
他们正擦地板时(这段时间)，老师进来了。
过去进行时和一般过去时的区别：
过去进行时表示过去某时正在进行的动作，强调动作的连续性。一般过去时表示一个完成的动作，即用一般过去时只表示有过这件事或比较短暂的动作：
He talked to his girlfriend on the phone yesterday.昨天他和女朋友通过电话。
He was talking to his girlfriend on the phone when I came in.我进来时，他在和女朋友通电话。
It rained yesterday.昨天下过雨。(不一定是一整天)
