1.如果使用一个更加正式的单个动词,比其相对应的短语动词听起来更加贴切自然,最好使用正式的单个单词。

2.避免使用个人化的或会话样式的文体格式(听起来好像正同考官聊天)。因此,尽量不要使用词,如I, me, my, you, we, us 和 our这样的单词。虽然这些单词广泛应用于非正式用语和口语中,通常认为在正式的学术性写作中,这些单词太过个人化,太过随意。

3.如果考生愿意,考生可以使用代词I来发表自己的看法。但是,在开篇和文章结尾使,尽量避免I的出现。这样,考生就可以避免使自己的文章太过个人化,具有太多的会话风格。

4.避免使用经常在日常会话中出现的单词和短语,因为这些单词或短语不太适合应用于学术写作中。字典中经常在这些词的前面标有“informal。(非正式)”的标签。考生在写作中,要使用更加正式得单词和短语。

5.虽然在非正式的写作中,常常使用缩写单词(如。, can’t,won’t,shouldn’t 和 hasn’t),但考试一定要避免在正式的学术写作中出现类似的缩写单词。

6.避免在正式的学术写作中使用缩略语。不要写yrs,e.g。这样的单词(分别代表原始的拉丁文中的exempli gratia和“for example(例如)”的意思)。也不要使用i.e. (原始的拉丁文id est的缩略语,意为“that is(也就是)”)。 而应该写出这些单词相对应的形式(years, for example 和that is)。

7.不要使用口语化的英语或俚语。 口语化的英语是一种非正式的英语类型,它包括词像gonna 或wanna这样的缩写单词,还有例如ain’t nothin’和dead as a doornail这样的短语。

字典中通常在口语化英语前面标上“colloq。”这样的注解。由于口语化的英语和俚语通常是应用于口语而不是写作中,如果出现在正式的学术写作中,文章就会太过口语化,而且缺少信度。

一:不要用空洞的单词和词组

1. 一些空洞的单词或词组更本不能为句子带来任何相关的或重要的信息,完全可以被删掉。比如下面的句子:

When all things are considered, young adults of today live more satisfying lives than those of their parents,in my opinion.

这句话当中的“when all things are considered”和“in my opinion”都显得多余。完全可以去掉。改为:Young adults of today live more satisfying lives than their parents.

2. 有些空洞和繁琐的表达方式可以进行替换,例如:

Due to the fact that our grandparents were under an obligation to help their parents, they did not have the options that young people have at this point in time.

“due to the fact that”就是一个很典型的繁琐的表达方式的例子,可以替换,简化为下面的表达方式:

Because our grandparents were obligated to help their parents,they did not have the options that young people have now.

二:避免重复

1. 尽量避免重复使用同样的词汇。或者有的时候虽然词汇没有重复,但意思却有重复。这时候可以做一些简化的工作。例如下面这个例子::

The farm my grandfather grew up on was large in size.

Large 对一个farm来说就是size方面的large,所以in size可以去掉,改为:The farm my grandfather grew up on was large.

更简洁的表达方式为:My grandfather grew up on a large farm.

2. 有时一个词组可以用一个更简单的单词来替换,例如:

My grandfather has said over and over again that he had to work on his parents" farm.

这里的over and over again就可以改为repeatedly,显得更为简洁:

My grandfather has said repeatedly that he had to work on his parents" farm.

三:选择最恰当的语法结构

选择合适的语法结构可以使句子意思的表达更为精确和简练。虽然语法的多样性也很重要,但选择最恰当的语法结构仍然是更为重要的考虑因素。以下原则是在考虑选择何种语法结构时可以参考的原则:

1. 一个句子的主语和谓语动词应该能够反映句子中的最重要的意思。例如:

The situation that resulted in my grandfather"s not being able to study engineering was that his father needed help on the farm.

从意思上来分析,上面这句话需要表达的重要的概念是“grandfather"s not being able to study”,而在表达这个概念时,原句用的主语是situation,谓语动词是was,不能强调需要表达的重点概念,可以改为下面这句话:My grandfather couldn"t study engineering because his father needed help on the farm.

2. 避免频繁使用“there be”结构,例如下面的句子:

There were 25 cows on the farm that my grandfather had to milk every day. It was hard work for my grandfather.

可以改为:My grandfather worked hard. He had to milk 25 cows on the farm every day.

更简洁的句式为:My grandfather worked hard milking 25 cows daily.

3. 把从句改为短语或单词。例如:

Dairy cows were raised on the farm,which was located100 kilometers from the nearest university and was in an area that was remote.

简介的表达方式为:The dairy farm was located in a remote area, 100 kilometers tothe nearest university.

4. 仅在需要强调宾语而不是主语的时候,才使用被动语态。例如:

In the fall, not only did the cows have to be milked, but also the hay was mowed and stacked by my grandfather"s family.

本句不够简洁的原因是本句的重心应该是“忙碌的家庭-my grandfather"s family”,而使用了被动语态后,仿佛重心变成了cows和hay。下面的表达方式是主动语态,相对来说更简洁一些:In the fall, my grandfather"s family not only milked the cow but also mowed and stacked the hay.

5. 用更为精确的一个动词来代替动词短语,例如下面这句话:

My grandfather didn"t have time to stand around doing nothing with his school friends.

Stand around doing nothing其实可以用一个动词来表达,即loiter:My grandfather didn"t have time to loiter with his school friends.

6. 有时两句话的信息经过组合完全可以用一句话来简练地表达,例如:

Profits from the farm were not large. Sometimes they were too small to meet the expenses of running a farm. They were not sufficient to pay for a university degree.

两句话的信息可以合并为下面这句更为简洁的句子:Profits from the farm were sometimes too small to meet operational expenses, let alone pay for a university degree.

一.具体—抽象

所谓具体到抽象指的是把一个单词的具体含义进行引申从而用在某些抽象的场合。下面我们来看几个例子。

1.Bask. Bask这个单词表示晒太阳,由此可以引申出沉浸,沐浴在(胜利,喜悦,赞美,关怀中)。如bask in the glory of world cup (沉浸在世界杯的荣耀中)或者bask in jubilance.(沉浸在喜悦中)

2.Brew. Brew这个单词也很熟悉,表示酿酒,一引申就可以变成酝酿这个抽象含义。如每逢战争即将打响,我们可以说Storms are brewing on every frontier.(每个边境上都酝酿着风暴。)

3. Swallow. Swallow表示吞咽东西,也就是不加咀嚼地吃东西,因此当我们在描述一个人不加思考就轻易相信别人时,就可以使用这个单词。如Surely, I know better than to swallow his words.(我当然不会傻到就这样相信他的鬼话)有时也可以表示取消,如He had to swallow his words。(他不得不取消前言。)

4.Gnaw. Gnaw指的是小动物,如啮齿类动物,咬,啃。稍加引申就变成了使烦恼、折磨。如The feeling of guilt gnawed at my conscience day and night.(内疚日夜折磨着我的良心。)

5. Wean. Wean原义指新生儿断奶,引申为使断绝、使戒掉、使放弃。如These plants have succeed in weaning from the green house environment.(这些植物已经成功摆脱了对温室环境的依赖。)

二.名词—动词

不同词性之间的转换也是小词活用的一个思路,这里我们讲讲相对较为普遍也容易掌握的名词到动词的活用。

1.Bridge. Bridge,桥梁。桥梁的作用很显然是连接,因此它做动词就可以表示连接、消除(隔阂、鸿沟等)。如bridge chasm, silence, difference, generation gap(弥合裂缝,打破冷场,消除分歧,弥合代沟)

2.Budget. Budget名词表示预算,动词为合理安排。如She is extremely busy, so she has to budget her time carefully.(她忙极了,所以必须好好安排时间。)

3.Toy. Toy是玩具的意思,由这个名词演变出的动词可以表示漫不经心地考虑、摆弄。如She toyed with a pencil, brooding on something like a hen.(她摆弄着铅笔,似有心事。)

4.Bracket. Brackets 复数形式表示括号。动词bracket指把某和某归入一类,相提并论,Jones and Smith were bracketed in a tie for the first prize. (约翰和史密斯双双被评为头奖。)

三.由人到物

所谓由人到物是指这个单词原本形容人,而在某些场合中可以采用“拟物”的手法,形容物体或事件。

1.Flatter. Flatter指谄媚、奉承。拟物后可以表示(照片、画像等)比真人好看。如You are surely flattered by this dress.(你穿这衣服更漂亮了。)

2.Flirt. Flirt最熟悉的意思是调情,而事实上,它还可以表示不当真的对待、玩笑地对待。如Flirt with the idea of resigning (脑子里一直浮现辞职的念头)

3. Conspire. conspire形容人同谋、密谋,也可以形容事物联合发生共同导致(不良后果)。如Wretched weather, nasty food and disgusting companions conspired to reduce my picnic to be a wet blanket.(糟糕的天气,难吃的东西,不喜欢的人,我的野餐真倒霉。)

4.Coax. Coax指人用好话劝、哄诱,指物的时候作耐心地处理、小心摆弄的意思。如Pianists have their own difficulties on the piano hammers that hit the string have to be coaxed not to sound like percussion.(钢琴演奏家也有自己的困难处,钢琴上的用来击弦的小锤务必仔细摆弄,以免听起来像打击乐。)
