一般现在时表示近期经常或习惯性发生的动作或状态，表达的是客观事实，一般用来表达主体的规律性和稳定性。而现在进行时则表示说话时正在进行的行动，或现阶段正在进行的行动或状态，不一定在说话时正在进行。
1. 一般现在时往往带有长久的意思，而现在进行时表示暂时的意思。比如：
He lives in Shanghai.他住在上海。(表示长久居住在上海)
He is now living in Shanghai.他现在住在上海。(表示他暂时居住在上海)
She works in a hospital.她在一所医院工作。(表示她长期在医院工作)
She is working in a hospital.她最近在一所医院工作。(表示她只是暂时在这儿工作)
2. 一般现在时表示 "存在的状况时"，常用来表示状态的动词，如keep, be, remain, stay, exist等，这些动词一般很少用在现在进行时中 。如：
The problem only exists in your head. 这个问题不过是你的假想。
3. 以here，there开头的句子不用进行时，而用一般现在时。如：
Look，there goes a train.看，火车来了。
4. 两者的时间状语是不同的。一般现在时的时间状语一般是always，usually，often，sometimes，never，every，day / week / month / year，on Sundays，in the morning /afternoon / evening等; 现在进行时的时间状语一般是now，these days，thisweek，at the moment等。如：
We play basketball in the afternoon.我们在下午打篮球。(一般现在时)
My mother is cleaning the room now.我妈妈正在打扫房间。(现在进行时)
5. 如look, taste, smell, sound等词作为时态动词时没有现在进行时，但作为动作动词时才有现在进行时。如：
Dinner smells good. 饭菜闻起来很香。
At that moment, he is smelling our fear. 在那一刻，他觉察到了我们的危险。
